Keynote Speaker Richard Rocheleau
Director, Hawaii Natural Energy Institute
has over 40 years of experience in renewable energy including photovoltaics manufacturing, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, energy storage, ocean energy systems, and grid integration. Since 2000, he has been the Director of the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute (HNEI), an Organized Research Unit at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. As Director he has secured over $150 million in funding for alternative energy research. Current activities include development of public- private partnerships for the testing and integration of alternative energy and grid enabling technologies; analysis to identify cost-effective pathways to Hawaii’s 100% RPS goals; and development of international partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region. Dr. Rocheleau currently chairs the technical advisory panel supporting Hawaiian Electric Companies Integrated Grid Planning efforts. HNEI has active programs supporting renewable development in Vietnam and Thailand; ongoing projects with various Korean and Okinawan entities, and is supporting energy assurance efforts at DOD facilities in the region.
